:: Newcomer/Volunteer Host Program

The Host Program

The Host Program aims to help newly arrived immigrants and refugees settle in Canada with more ease and friendship. The program’s mandate is to help immigrants overcome the stress of moving to a new country. Volunteers/friends familiar with Canadian ways help newcomers learn about available services and how to use them, practice English, and participate in the community.

Who is a Host?

A Host is a Canadian volunteer who has lived in Canada for over 3 years. Gladwin’s Hosts should also have lived in Abbotsford for over 3 years. Hosts can be individuals, couples, families, or groups who are interested in:

  • Welcoming and orienting newcomers
  • Assisting newcomers in settling in Abbotsford, BC, Canada
  • Learning about other cultures, countries, and languages
  • Sharing community information
  • Making new friends
  • Helping others

How can a volunteer Host contribute?

  • Committing 1 - 2 hours per week, for a period of at least 6 months with an individual, couple, or family
  • Provide newcomers with orientation to the community of Abbotsford
  • Practicing English
  • Socializing

Who is a Newcomer?

Immigrants and refugees; people who have been permanent residents for less than 3 years or are applying to be become permanent residents in Canada.

What can Hosts and Newcomers do together?

Here are a few ideas. More details will be provided at the orientation session.

  • Visit Abbotsford libraries and other community centres
  • Walk in the neighbourhood or in parks
  • Use the public transit
  • Shopping
  • Visit local attractions and events
  • Practice conversational English

How are people paired?

Newcomers and interested volunteers will apply at Gladwin Language Centre. Gladwin’s Host Program Instructor will recruit and train volunteers. We then establish compatible matches between Hosts and Newcomers. Matches are based on similar interests, need, family size, age, occupation and your requests.

How can I volunteer or register as a newcomer?

Visit Gladwin Language Centre during office hours to fill out an application form. Volunteers will need to provide current personal references. Newcomers will need to bring their Permanent Resident (PR) card or visa as well as their current contact information. Upon screening and completion of an orientation session, you will be able to begin your new friendship!
